Federated Arms 'Vindicator'. 3D Print Model Replica from Cyberpunk 2077.

The Federated Arms ‘Vindicator’ is weapon from the video game Cyberpunk 2077 by CD Project Red. After seeing it in the 2018 game trailer I thought it would be a good challenge to replicate as a 3d printable model.

The following is a brief build log of my process:

I started by pulling screen shots from the youtube trailer, trying to get all the different angles of the gun, in particular a really solid side view. This turned out to be easier said than done, as lens distortion made close-up views of the weapon difficult to get an accurate profile from. This meant most of the dimensions are ‘guesstimates’ using a combinations of angles and relative sizes.

By using the references I was able to model the gun in Fusion 360. This model presented a number of challenges and considerations, and full credit must be given to the designers at CD Project Red. In the screen shot above you can see the rear of the grip and upper piece of the gun are a single molded piece, for 3d printing I decided to separate these parts for better orientation on the print bed. I decided against separating out all the moving mechanisms to incorporate into the 3d print, as my goal for this 3d modelling exercise was to replicate a form purely from imperfect in game reference, rather than replicate functionality.

I made a couple of quick test prints early on to make sure I had the sizing correct before I continued too deep into the model. The nice thing about Fusion 360 is the timeline can allow you to correct errors you might have made early on, however it’s much better just to get it right as you’re doing it!

Above you can see the 3d printing orientation I used to maximize the detail based on the geometry of the part.

Because I knew I wouldn’t be painting this one, I just went ahead and glued all the pieces together using superglue.

After the amount of interest people had in the first model, I created a ‘version 2’ with a moving trigger mechanism, removable magazine and moving slide. This is all available for download over on the resources page.
